What is TAE50211?
The Diploma of Training Design and Development (TAE50211) is a new qualification that reflects the roles of training developers and instructional designers who are responsible for analysing training needs and designing training solutions and products. This qualification will benefit those who design programs to meet workplace capability requirements or evaluate the effectiveness of training programs. They may have a role in providing guidance and advice to trainers and assessors, promoting innovative practices, such as e-learning, and in researching and incorporating best practice in training and assessment into training programs and products. The Diploma of Training Design and Development represents an expression of achievement that reflects the robustness of training design required to maintain high standards desired in the VET workforce. This qualification provides experienced training developers with a pathway to extend their VET careers.
Who should do it?
This qualification is specifically designed for those who:
- are involved in the design and development of training programs and resources and/or
- are responsible for evaluating the success of training and/or
- have a role in providing guidance and advice to trainers and assessors in promoting innovative practices.
What is the MRWED Course Structure?
The Diploma of Training Design and Development is comprised of 10 Units of Competency. This includes 5 Core Units and 5 Elective Units.

How can you study this qualification?
MRWED offers the following delivery options to complete the Diploma of Vocational Education and Training:
- Face-to-face (through regular public courses held in our dedicated national Training and Assessment Centres)
- Correspondence (From 1st April 2012)
- Online (From 1st July 2012)
- Recognition of Prior Learning
- Custom designed courses for organisations
Regardless of the option selected, participants can obtain any required assistance throughout their course by calling MRWED Learning Support on FREECALL 1800 2 TRAIN (1800 2 87246). There are no additional charges for accessing support through either option.
How is it assessed?
In the face-to-face program, a significant amount of the assessment evidence is captured in class. However, there are additional, practical-focused projects, including some portfolio development, required post-training.
For correspondence and online students, they will work through the courseware of each unit and complete the assessment work at the end. This assessment is comprised of a combination of workbook-based questions and portfolio tasks.
For students looking to complete their qualification via a recognition pathway, a simple-to-use RPL kit is available for candidates to guide them in their collection of relevant evidence to support their claim of competency.
